Be a Leader in Your Organization

Many of us are familiar with the frustration of sitting back while others take the lead on projects in the workplace. Although it feels impossible to shake things up enough to get your chance to shine, it’s really not that far out of reach when you understand the basics of leadership. If you generally don’t feel like a leader, you are more than likely a situational leader. This means that although you don’t naturally take the lead, you can really shine when a project comes around that falls within your set of strengths. Unlike habitual leaders who take charge out of habit, you need a little extra push to rise to your leading potential. This doesn’t mean that you aren’t as capable of strong leadership, but that you just haven’t found an effective way to take the lead.
Here are a few tips for finding the leader in you.
Identify your strengths
It can be hard to take the lead when you aren’t particularly certain of whether or not you are the best to do so. Knowing your strengths will help you know whether or not your next project is a good opportunity for you to assume the leading role. You can start a journal, consult others, analyze your past performances, or simply ponder on what you feel most comfortable with to find what you do best.
Gain confidence
Now that you know what you’re good at, it’s time to believe it! Other group members will know if you don’t feel confident in the lead and in turn, will look for another leader. Know that when a project comes around that requires your strengths, you are a highly qualified leader.
Be assertive
We don’t mean pushy or aggressive, but simply upfront with your ideas on getting started and the creative process. If you don’t speak up, someone else will. Recognize when it’s your time to shine, and seize the moment!
